I am an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Science at the University of California Davis. I have reviewed applications for the Graduate Group of Ecology (GGE) for many years and served as vice chair of admissions in 2019-2020 and chair of admissions in 2020-2021. My interest in equitable admissions was initially piqued by outreach materials on holistic review provided by the GGE Diversity Committee Admissions and Awards Subcommittee and was further stoked by C-CIDE trainings. Serving as a major professor for ten graduate students over the past 6 years has also given me first-hand experience of the important role non-cognitive competencies play in student success. Participating in C-CIDE facilitation training will provide me the tools needed to teach other faculty about how holistic application review can help them identify students who will enrich and strengthen their programs.
